Anushka Purohit Explains Her Mission https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/10-questions-with-anushka-purohit-on-her-appointment-to-hong-kongs-social-enterprise-committee/ Wed, 07 May 2025 05:02:02 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505253 1. Congratulations on being selected for this government committee! What does this recognition mean to you personally, and how does it align with your values?

It’s huge because I’m the only person on the list who at first glance wouldn’t ‘look’ like a Hong Konger, and that’s my power. I want to represent people from different walks of life, especially people like me who truly identify as a Hong Konger but don’t necessarily fit the traditional boxes to be considered as one. I’ve always cared about creating opportunities that don’t exist, so I hope to use this platform to make unheard voices heard.

2. You mentioned that this committee is a platform to represent underrepresented voices, such as ethnic minorities and women in male-dominated fields. What specific challenges do you believe these groups face, and how can your role address them?

The first and possibly largest challenge is the lack of representation – when there aren’t platforms for their concerns, thoughts and representations to be shared, it’s never factored into decision making. As a part of the social enterprise committee, I also want to reinforce the idea that social enterprises can, and frankly, should make money, which is something I’ll bring up time and again. I believe these groups face the challenges of having opportunities that are relevant to the stages of life they are in, or, platforms that cater to their needs, i.e. being inclusive in the languages they use or the type and frequency of funding provided. I hope to open these conversations and rebuild these projects accordingly!

3. Given that many policy positions come with significant responsibility and can stifle honest expression, how does this merit-based, separate platform allow you to speak more freely and authentically?

Because it isn’t a role that we are compensated for or even ‘rewarded’ for, there isn’t and cannot be an expectation to speak in a certain manner. We have been chosen for our individual experiences with social enterprises, and the entire nomination and selection process focused on asking questions about these experiences. I was picked for the insights I have and the honest opinions I have for improvement, so I’m excited to share it with a wider group and ideate improvements!

4. You’ve said you didn’t want to get into policy because of the constraints on voicing your opinion. How do you see your role on this committee as different in terms of influence and freedom?

Given the committee is under the Home of Youth Affairs within the HK Government, there is a lot of support and influence we are given. The only ask from us is to discuss our thoughts, use our individual platforms to disseminate those discussions, and act as individuals who bring the opinions of many to the table.

5. What do you think is the current state of representation for ethnic minorities and women in Hong Kong’s decision-making bodies, and what changes do you hope to bring about during your time on this committee?

I think we are slowly and steadily making movements towards representation for ethnic minorities and women – a prime example would be the representation on this committee, but I definitely think there is a long way to go. As an example, a big part of being on this committee is having the ability to speak the local language, Cantonese – while it makes sense, I am hopeful that with the advancement of technology, this won’t be a limitation in the years to come. I hope to support social enterprises with additional funding opportunities, diversifying focus on areas beyond finance, technology and deep tech, and promoting profit-making social enterprises.

6. What was your personal journey that led you to this point? Was there a pivotal moment that inspired you to step into leadership, particularly for underrepresented groups?

When I was deciding what I wanted to study in College, I never considered Engineering because I had never seen a female in my immediate circle take it up, let alone be successful in it. This meant I never even looked at it as a viable option, even disagreeing with my mother when she recognized that it would be a field of my interest. When I ended up selecting Engineering and thanking my mother insanely for what she did, I realized that I wanted to be that representative for others. For so many young people, I wanted to be the person that made them believe they can do it too.

7. As a woman in a male-dominated field, how do you navigate the challenge of balancing your own career ambitions with the broader need for diversity and representation?

By being fearless – I never thought about what people say or think, and focus solely on what I want to do and how to make it happen. My career ambition, and focus on it, is what ultimately lets me represent diversity – by being unafraid of speaking out, seeking and creating opportunities and leading initiatives, I inadvertently represent myself, which helps me represent larger causes and communities.

8. What do you believe is the most important quality for leaders to possess when it comes to driving inclusive and representative decision-making?

The ability to listen. Leaders are only as effective as the perspectives they gain, and inclusivity is hard to achieve when the sample set is incredibly concentrated. I struggled with listening as an angsty teenager growing up, but I now recognize it as my superpower. It’s not always about being the loudest in every room – it’s about being the loudest in the right rooms.

9. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years as part of this committee, and how will you measure success in terms of your impact on underrepresented communities?

I hope to create a platform where people are not afraid of sharing their thoughts, and hopefully inspiring other youth to also take up platforms and roles like these, which albeit come with a lot of responsibility, allow for personal and professional growth. For me, success will be even a single individual coming forward and saying that our initiatives have helped them – if I can create long-running funding initiatives and support groups, even better!

10. Lastly, what message would you like to send to others—especially young ethnic minorities and women—who may be hesitant about stepping into leadership roles? How can they use their voices to make a difference?

There’s literally nothing to be afraid of! As ethnic minority, we’re already lower in numbers, which makes it even more important for us to compensate with our voices. Every opinion is valid, and those of us that get the opportunity to step into leadership roles are the luckiest – not using these opportunities is a privilege going to waste. Seek these opportunities, and where they don’t exist, create them. Let your actions speak louder than your words, but for that to happen, sometimes you have to start by using your words first.

WOI – Jeannie, you left a career in law to focus on education and family literacy. What was the turning point for you?

Similar to many parents, my priorities began to change the moment my daughter came into my life! I wanted a career change as I looked for ways to give myself flexibility and allow me to spend more time with my daughter.

At the outset, I did not plan to study and qualify to become a teacher. I looked for ways to equip myself with parenting knowledge, and it was during my maternity leave that I researched and discovered the Montessori method as an early childhood education approach.

I was fascinated by this. I saw how the approach seeks not just to educate in the most traditional sense of providing schooling, but one that could be adopted as a way of life, a way to help children develop and flourish as individuals. Gradually, I took on studying and practicing full-time, eventually qualifying as a Montessori teacher for the 0-6 years old age group. The journey into literacy was simply a natural progression from that early childhood education experience.

What does ‘family literacy’ mean to you, and why is it so important in Hong Kong?

At its best, Hong Kong is a vibrant city where things are happening all the time and at an incredible pace. But such an environment can leave you breathless, the eagerness to keep up with the pace sometimes means that we forget the need to slow down and connect with our loved ones. This is something most working parents in Hong Kong experience and have shared as a constant struggle.

So for me, “family literacy” is a way for us to take a moment and make those connections through the medium of reading. It gives parents a gateway into the hearts and minds of our children. It allows us the opportunity for us to listen to our children, and hopefully catch a glimpse into their world through the power of literature.

The REadCONNECT campaign encourages families to slow down and reconnect. Why that theme?

Everyone is connected these days, all the time and everywhere. By that, I mean through our mobile devices – we are, unfortunately, never off them. Families looking at their devices, for example, during meal times is an all-too-familiar sight. The more we “connect”, the less we are “connecting”. It gives us less time and space for deeper, better-quality conversations.

We want to highlight the significance of those conversations through REadCONNECT. It is a campaign that seeks to remind everyone that, with the help of a book or two, there is as much we can learn from each other. We want to use the campaign to encourage parents to read with their children, not necessarily because there is some specific reading target that needs to be achieved, but because there might just be some joyfulness to be found in sharing a few words and pictures together. Hopefully, along the way, stronger relationships are formed and families can simply enjoy reading for the sake of reading.

You often talk about teaching parents how to read with their children. Why is that so important?

This is an interesting question because in a way, we DON’T want to teach parents how to read with their children!

Parents In HK sometimes have this misconception about the purpose of reading, which is often linked to achieving a particular goal. They sometimes think they have to quiz their children by asking them about spelling or testing them on their reading comprehension as a way to help their child truly understand the literature in front of them. I’m afraid these are all ways to discourage a child from reading!

What we encourage is something akin to sharing the book and having a chat about the book. This is especially achievable with picture books because instead of reading it, picture books allow children to simply describe what they are seeing – the colour of the cover, the expressions on the characters’ faces, the size of the fonts even! Those simple descriptions can then flow into conversations with more detail.

This way of reading also gives parents the opportunity to observe their children, and discover that, perhaps, their child sees things in ways the parents could never have imagined. It will allow parents to broaden their awareness of what types of books are out there, and what may or may not be suitable for their own children.

The tram ride and book-making workshop are really unique. What do you hope families take away from that experience?

On April 27th, there will be a tram parade running along the route between Witty Street and Hong Kong Central Library in Causeway Bay. During the tram journey, we encourage parents and children to put down their devices and to be guided by our storytellers to create their own stories, inspired by real life scenery they observe along the way.

If there is one public transport that forces you to slow down in Hong Kong, it’s probably the tram! So we hope the families can just enjoy the tram ride, appreciate the scenery along the way, take inspiration and savour the finer details of the route as we go along.

The book-making workshops will give children a chance to be their own authors and illustrators. We encourage children to blend in what they observe from their real-life surroundings, with the power of their very own imaginations for their creations!

Many parents feel they just don’t have the time to read every day. What would you say to them?

Starting small usually works. It can be as simple as a page or two, or 5-10 minutes, everyday. Perhaps involving our children through a short but regular storytime every evening, or even as simple as sharing what we saw or experienced during the day. The key is to do what works best for you without taking the enjoyment away, and building from there.

Have you seen changes in families when reading becomes a regular habit?

Parents are often surprised by the response of their children. When we allow children to give us feedback, we often find something that we were not aware of about our children. Quite often, parent-child communication is improved and children become more confident in sharing their thoughts and feelings. That, in turns, leads to a higher degree of empathy, compassion, and an understanding of each other’s needs.

Bring Me A Book is known for building a culture, not just providing books. What does that mean to you?

As a charity, Bring Me A Book Hong Kong requires volunteers to support our many community workshops and storytelling events. Fortunately, we have been able to build a dedicated volunteer team since 2006. Our volunteers include parents and educators who support our mission of promoting reading aloud and are committed to our family literacy ethos.

Our core programme team members are all parents with children aged between 3 – 10.  We design and craft our programmes based on our own parenting experience. Often, we  brainstorm ideas on how we can better-support families and curate our book recommendations based on real life challenges we face in our everyday lives. With the resumption of face-to-face events after COVID restrictions were lifted, it has been pleasing to see the return of previous volunteers as well as welcoming new ones.

What more can schools and communities do to support reading for emotional connection, not just academics?

This is an extremely difficult question, because there is no “one thing” that one can do. We appreciate the need for reading to support academic achievement, but we believe it should start with reading for enjoyment.

A slight altering of our mindsets towards reading would be a good place to start. This could be encouraging more reading for simple leisure, book-making activities to allow children to express themselves, or coming up with your own stories. Helping students understand that often, there is no “right answer” to how one feels or interprets a story could foster them becoming confident readers and writers in the future.

What’s a book that’s had a lasting impact on you?

I am a firm believer that there is a book for every child and there will be one book that will inspire a child to become a reader. For me, it was Matilda, by Roald Dahl. As an only child, I resonated with Matilda’s love of reading.  When I first moved to the UK at the age of 6, I barely spoke a word of English and it was initially quite daunting. I quickly found solace in reading through daily visits to the school library. Just like Matilda, I also had a very caring teacher like Ms Honey to help ease my transition to the new environment.

A more recent book that has had a significant impact on me is a Chinese picture book, 只有一個學生的學校 by Taiwanese author, 劉旭恭. I came across this book during my teacher training. This book prompted me to re-evaluate the meaning and purpose of education as well as a reminder of what children need in order to thrive.  I wholeheartedly recommend this picture book as a must-read for all parents and educators.

What was your favourite book as a child, and do you still have a copy?

I have two and to this day, continue to hold these two titles in high regard. As a child,  I remember being captivated by the Anne of Green Gable by L.M Montgomery.  I didn’t have my own copy at the time and borrowed this book as well as its sequels from the public library many times. I was recently gifted a copy of this book, which will now go in my permanent collection.

My other favourite book is the classic, Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. My mum gave me this book as a present just before I went to university. I loved the message in the book and even now, I still get teary when I read it. I have shared it with my 7 year old daughter. She has yet to grasp the message in the book but I hope that she will one day. This is the beauty of picture books, it can be enjoyed by everyone of different ages and you will have a different interpretation of the book at various stages of life.

Do you have a go-to picture book you love reading with children?

In my storytelling and community workshops, I enjoy sharing The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld. This is a simple but heartwarming story with an important message about the power of listening when our loved ones encounter challenges and sorrow. As parents, it is tempting to rush in with a “solution” when we see our children struggle. This story serves as a reminder that we need to make time and space to listen to our children. It is through listening that we are able to read their emotional cues and to tune in to their needs so that we can provide appropriate support to them.

What does reading time look like in your own home?

Bedtime stories are certainly a staple in our home. Ofcourse, there are days when I struggle to stay awake and so bedtime stories become more of a pillow talk to recount highlights of the day (which in my opinion, is still storytime!). On Sundays when we have more time, we enjoy snuggling on the sofa and we take turns to choose books to read together. In my current role, I am so blessed to have access to many wonderful books and get recommended new titles almost on a weekly basis. I love reading with my daughter, I am constantly amazed at the small detail she picks up in the books and see how she relates to the stories. In particular, I enjoy hearing her sharing as she often draws parallels from the stories with her own personal experience, which often allows me to get a glimpse of her thinking and recent happenings at school!

If you could share a tram ride with any author—past or present—who would it be, and why?

Excellent question! I am sure I will have a different answer for this if you ask me this next time. Seeing our big event is just around the corner, I would love to invite Mo Willems to join our tram parade and to see how he would interpret the iconic HK tram ride with his distinctive writing and illustration style!

As we were preparing for REadCONNECT, we researched various children’s authors for inspiration. Mo Willems’ Knuffle Bunny trilogy stood out given its message and illustration style. I was touched to learn that the protagonist of the story was inspired by Mo Willems’ own daughter, Trixie. Out of the trilogy, the third book is my favourite as it represents Mo Willems’ wish for his daughter, who is now an adult. Someday, if I become an author, I foresee the story will be inspired by my own experience with my daughter. I would love to get some personal tips from Mo Willems to bring this project to fruition in the future.

What’s your ideal way to unwind after a busy week—does it involve a book?

Visiting bookstores is high on my list.  Whenever I have downtime or if I happen to walk past a bookstore, I am instinctively drawn to go inside to browse books. Depending on my mood that day, I could be looking at novels, self-help books, travel guides or sometimes cook books. One of my favourite books stores used to be Page One at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. The shop had a great collection and there was a fantastic children’s reading area. Sadly, physical bookstores are on the decline now in Hong Kong. In recent years, I find myself rummaging through the various book drift stations scattered around the city. We have one in my neighbourhood, where I visit fairly regularly. From time to time, I come across real gems of children’s books, which I add to our Bring Me A Book Reference collection. As a family activity, we are big fans of the Shum Shui Po Public Library (near Nam Cheong). We love the design of the children’s library on the ground floor where there are many reading nooks for parents and children to relax and read together. I highly recommend all families to check it out!

The Aesthetic Doctor Hongkongers Trust with Their Skin (and Secrets): An Interview with Jolie Beauté’s Founder, Dr Yip https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/the-aesthetic-doctor-hongkongers-trust-with-their-skin-and-secrets-an-interview-with-jolie-beautes-founder-dr-yip/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 13:40:01 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505186 The Aesthetic Doctor Hongkongers Trust with Their Skin
An Interview with Jolie Beauté’s Founder, Dr Yip:

For years, Jolie Beauté was one of Hong Kong’s best-kept skincare secrets. Tucked away just two MTR stops from Central — above Jordan station — it quietly built a reputation among those in the know. From celebrities and KOLs to actors and high-profile professionals, Dr Yip’s clinic became a trusted destination not for chandeliers or Instagrammable decor, but for science-led results, transparent pricing, and a rare sense of trust.

There are no aggressive sales pitches here. No upsells. No pressure. Just a clear, evidence-based approach to skincare and aesthetics — with Dr Yip, a trained surgeon and medical aesthetics expert, at the helm. Every patient knows exactly what they’re signing up for before they walk in. Transparent pricing, expert care, and the kind of calm clarity that’s increasingly hard to find.

We sat down with Dr Yip to talk about the new rules of skincare, why fillers are falling out of fashion, and how beauty has quietly shifted from trends to trust:

Dr Yip, let’s start with the basics. People often confuse Botox and fillers — what’s the difference?

Dr Yip: Great question — and one I hear almost daily. Botox and fillers are very different, both in how they work and what they’re designed to do.

Botox relaxes muscles. It’s typically used to soften expression lines — like crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases — by reducing movement in the underlying muscle. The effect is temporary and can last 3–6 months.

Fillers, on the other hand, add volume. They’re made of substances like hyaluronic acid and are used to restore fullness — for example in cheeks, lips, under the eyes, or even the jawline. They’re great for contouring but must be used with precision, especially in the face where anatomy really matters.

Why have so many people stopped having filler?

Dr Yip: We’re seeing a shift away from that “overfilled” aesthetic. Patients are more informed now — they want to look fresher, not different. In some cases, filler was being used too often, or in areas where volume loss wasn’t the real issue.

There’s also growing awareness of filler fatigue — when repeated use leads to unnatural results or even distortion of facial features. In our clinic, we take a very conservative approach: if you don’t need it, we’ll tell you. Sometimes the answer isn’t more volume — it’s skin quality, collagen, or simply time.

What’s Rejuran? It’s gaining popularity — but what does it actually do?

Dr Yip: Rejuran is a polynucleotide-based injectable that works by stimulating the skin’s healing processes and boosting collagen production. It’s often called “skin healing treatment” and is excellent for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, and treating acne scars.

It doesn’t change your shape, it doesn’t freeze muscles — it just helps the skin regenerate and repair itself from within. That’s why I love it. It’s subtle but powerful. Perfect for people who want their skin to look healthier, not necessarily “done”.

How does Morpheus8 fit into the picture?

Dr Yip: Morpheus8 is a powerful treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) to remodel skin and stimulate collagen production. What makes it different is the depth it can reach — anywhere from 2 to 7mm, depending on the area being treated.

On the face, we typically use depths of 2 to 4mm, tailored to each individual’s skin quality and fat distribution. On the body, we can go deeper, especially when targeting areas with more laxity.

But it’s not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Morpheus8 can burn fat, which is beneficial in some areas — but when treating the face, we actually want to preserve fat as we age, not reduce it. That’s why we take a gradual, personalised approach. The goal isn’t to shrink or over-tighten, but to refine, improve skin texture, and gently lift — all while respecting the natural structure of the face.

And what is Oligio? Is it like Ultherapy or Thermage?

Dr Yip: Oligio is a radiofrequency skin tightening treatment — it’s often compared to Thermage. It’s non-invasive, safe for most skin types, and ideal for people experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity.

While Thermage and Ultherapy work differently (Ultherapy uses ultrasound), Oligio is often more comfortable and gives a visible tightening effect over time. It stimulates collagen while improving elasticity, and it’s particularly popular around the jawline and neck.

Jolie Beauté has always taken a very understated approach — why?

Dr Yip: Because skin isn’t a trend. It’s biology. It reflects your health, hormones, habits — not just what serum you’re using. I don’t believe in chasing every new active ingredient or device. We carefully choose what works, based on science, not marketing.

Our patients trust us to be honest. If you don’t need something, I’ll tell you. If there’s a more effective or safer option, we’ll discuss it. We don’t do pushy packages, and you’ll always know what your bill is before you walk through the door. That matters to people — especially when it comes to their face.

What type of patient is Jolie Beauté best suited for?

Dr Yip: If you’re looking for a glam, Instagrammable clinic experience — we may not be for you. And that’s okay.

But if you want transparent pricing, a calm, discreet environment, and honest advice from someone who’s medically trained to understand the anatomy of your face — then we’re a good match. Many of our patients come in for skin health (facials and non-invasive treatments) between procedural appointments. Others just want to feel more like themselves again. We see tourists, professionals, new mums, and (lots of!) men — anyone who wants real results without the noise.

You’ve built a loyal following, but Jolie Beauté still feels like an IYKYK kind of place. Why do you think that is?

Dr Yip: We’ve never advertised heavily. It’s always been word of mouth. Patients who come here tend to stay with us for years. They value expertise over flash.

For many, it’s a place where they don’t have to second-guess — there’s no pressure, just honest, medically grounded skincare and aesthetic advice. And sometimes, that’s exactly what people are looking for.

The Quiet Confidence of Jolie Beauté

In a beauty space driven by trends, filters, and fast fixes, Jolie Beauté offers something refreshingly different. No noise, no push — just evidence-based treatments, medical expertise, and a deep respect for skin as something to care for, not correct.

Whether you’re here to restore balance, support healthy ageing, or simply get clarity on what your skin really needs, this is one of those rare clinics that treats beauty as personal — and where the results are designed to last.

Why Your Phone is Aging You Faster—” Tech Neck” – And What to Do About It https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/why-your-phone-is-aging-you-faster-tech-neck-and-what-to-do-about-it/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 13:10:40 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505133 Why Your Phone is Aging You Faster—” Tech Neck”

– and what to do about it

Whilst writing this, I thought about how often I tilt my head down to check the phone. I bow my head to reply to an email, or scroll through Instagram. In fact, I spend most of my waking time in that “tech neck” position, looking at my laptop or my phone. I read the phrase, “tech neck” and look at my own neck. Yes, there are lines there – and apparently, tech neck is a thing.

First – I am no stranger to aesthetic practices and I have trusted Dr. Yip with my face (and neck) for over 8 years. She has never let me down and I feel pretty good for my age (43). She helps me to age gracefully and look and feel at my best. That said, I am now at the point where my neck doesn’t look as fresh as it could and I might be ready for a little help. So, I’d like to understand the idea of tech neck better. Is this really due to phone use or are the lines on our neck just part of natural ageing? And, what can we do about it?

To explore what can be done to prevent and treat tech neck, I spoke with Dr. Yip, lead surgeon at Jolie Beaute and one of Hong Kong’s most respected aesthetics experts. Her approach is a thoughtful, preventative strategy that strengthens and restores the skin’s natural structure rather than overcorrecting it.

Is Tech Neck a Thing?

“Yes” according to Dr. Yip. So called, “tech neck”, is on the rise due to excessive phone and device use. Looking down, often slumped in bed or on the couch creates the “tech neck” angle – which “creases” up the area. Even if we don’t stay in this position for a long time,  small, repetitive movements to look down get compounded over years of daily screen time and it’s changing the way we age”.

According to Dr. Yip, “tech neck” is more than just fine (or deep) lines appearing in the neck area. It’s a visible shift in how the jawline and neck area lose definition over time, with fine lines and sagging appearing earlier and in a more pronounced way than we would expect from someone of that age.

Traditionally, concerns around neck laxity and jawline softening were associated with natural aging. “Now, lifestyle factors are accelerating the process. Patients as early as their twenties and thirties are noticing the early signs of skin laxity, there is nothing innately wrong with this process but it has become a more common area of concern for my clients. As I always say, it’s a privilege to age, but let’s try to age well.”

How ‘Tech Neck’ Develops—and Why It’s Harder to Treat Than Facial Aging

The skin on the neck and jawline is structurally different from facial skin. It has fewer oil glands, less collagen, and thinner layers of support tissue, making it less resilient to constant movement, gravity, and repetitive folding.

“Many patients focus on facial anti-aging but overlook their neck and jawline,” explains Dr. Yip. “By the time they notice sagging or deeper lines, the skin has already lost a significant amount of elasticity. We treat this area with either injectable or non invasive approaches which are both growing in popularity in Hong Kong.”

Dr Yip explains to us that, unlike the face, which is frequently treated with skincare and injectables, the neck ages more subtly—but often more dramatically. When combined with long hours of looking down at screens, poor posture, and natural collagen depletion, the result is an increasingly softened jawline, horizontal neck lines, and overall loss of definition.

“While there is no single treatment that reverses neck aging entirely, a combined approach using regenerative technology, skin-tightening treatments, and preventative care can dramatically improve definition and skin quality”.

So you have tech neck? What to do next

First, we all know that we need to be on our phones less, but realistically, that’s not going to happen. Second, we’re all for ageing gracefully, naturally and being compassionate to ourselves about the skin we’re in. But, if we want to take action, how can we fix neck wrinkles and “tech neck”?

Dr. Yip explains that she takes a customised approach to treating “tech neck” or neck ageing in general. She focuses on stimulation and structural support rather than excessive intervention.

“The goal isn’t to freeze movement or create an unnatural lift,” she says. “The most effective treatments are those that work with the skin’s natural biology, triggering long-term improvements rather than temporary corrections.”

So, here are the options for treatments for strengthening the skin and redefining the jawline.

Ultra 360 Exilis: Subtle Skin Tightening for Early Prevention

For patients in the early stages of “tech neck”—when fine lines and mild laxity first appear—radiofrequency energy is one of the most effective treatments to strengthen and tighten the skin.

Ultra 360 Exilis delivers controlled heat deep into the dermal layers, stimulating collagen production and tissue remodeling. The result is firmer, smoother skin with a subtle lifting effect.

– Best for: Early signs of laxity, fine lines, and skin creasing

– Treatment approach: Weekly sessions for six to eight weeks, followed by maintenance every few months

– Results timeline: Immediate skin tightening with continued collagen stimulation over several weeks

“This is one of the most effective ways to slow down the visible effects of tech neck before they become more pronounced,” says Dr. Yip. “Starting early with skin-tightening treatments can prevent the need for more aggressive interventions later on.”

Morpheus8: Deep Collagen Remodeling for Lasting Firmness

“For patients experiencing moderate sagging or deeper structural changes, Morpheus8 combines radiofrequency with microneedling to target both the superficial skin and the deeper connective tissues”.

Unlike traditional microneedling, which Dr Yip explains works only on the surface of the skin, Morpheus8 penetrates deeper to stimulate collagen and elastin from within, resulting in tighter, more lifted skin over time.

– Best for: Moderate skin laxity, loss of definition, deeper wrinkles

– Treatment approach: Three sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, with annual maintenance

– Results timeline: Improvements begin within a few weeks, with full results visible after three months

“Morpheus8 works well for those who are beginning to see structural skin changes but want a non-surgical solution with lasting results,” says Dr. Yip.

Oligio RF: Restoring Jawline Definition and Tightening Sagging Skin  (non-invasive)

“For more noticeable laxity and loss of jawline definition, Oligio RF delivers a higher-intensity radiofrequency treatment designed to remodel collagen at a deeper level”.

The controlled energy stimulates neocollagenesis, helping to firm, lift, and reshape the jawline while maintaining natural movement. Side note, I was invited to try Oligio and I loved the results – bouncy, cloud like, more youthful skin

– Best for: Loss of definition along the jawline, mild to moderate skin sagging

– Treatment approach: Sessions every four to six months, often combined with Ultra 360 Exilis

– Results timeline: Progressive improvement over several months, with long-term benefits

“This is a key treatment for those noticing a softened lower face and jawline,” Dr. Yip explains. “It delivers deeper structural support, which is crucial for patients who aren’t yet ready for injectables but want to maintain definition.”

Profhilo: Deep Hydration and Elasticity Restoration

Profhilo is a next-generation injectable treatment that stimulates the skin’s natural regenerative processes rather than simply filling lines or adding volume.  So, as far as we understand it, this treatment is about helping your skin to regenerate vs. the old school approach of adding filler to every “space” that needs filling.

Dr. Yip explained, “Unlike traditional fillers, Profhilo spreads evenly beneath the skin, delivering deep hydration and collagen stimulation for a firmer, more elastic appearance. We deliver, small, surface level injections and you can expect to see visible signs of improvement over the next few weeks and months”.

– Best for: Skin laxity, crepey texture, and fine lines

– Treatment approach: Two sessions, one month apart, followed by maintenance every six months

– Results timeline: Noticeable improvement in firmness, elasticity, and overall skin resilience after 2 weeks, lasts around 4-6 months.

“This is one of the most popular treatments for the neck area among my clients. It’s an effective way to rebuild the skin’s foundation without creating an artificial look,” explains Dr. Yip. “It enhances rather than changes—keeping results natural and refined.”

Subtle, Long-Term Solutions Over Aggressive Fixes

This is my third conversation about aesthetics with Dr. Yip and a theme is emerging. The conversation around aesthetics is shifting. Patients no longer want dramatic, obvious interventions—they want to look like themselves, just fresher and better supported over time. I can relate to this, I don’t mind looking my age (truly), I just don’t want to look tired. I want to look and feel fresh and at my best.

“With modern treatments, we have the ability to prevent and correct early signs of aging in a way that feels natural and undetectable,” Dr. Yip says. “It’s about longevity—giving the skin the support it needs so that dramatic corrections aren’t necessary later.”

My take on this? For those noticing the early signs of “tech neck”, the best results come from a personalised, strategic approach that balances non-invasive treatments with lifestyle adjustments.  Will I change the way I use my phone? I’ll try, but deadlines are deadlines and Instagram is well, you know. So, I have booked myself in with Dr. Yip have my first round of Morpheus 8. I have never tried this treatment but I have seen and heard celebrities obsess over its effectiveness, so I am excited (and will report back – on Instagram).

Dr. Yip ends with saying “The earlier we intervene with preventative treatments and regenerative aesthetics, the longer we can maintain a defined, youthful jawline—without the need for more invasive procedures.”

Come back soon for my next chat with Dr Yip.

Why the ‘Salmon Sperm’ Trend Isn’t Going Away — And What It’s Really Doing for Your Skin https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/why-the-salmon-sperm-trend-isnt-going-away-and-what-its-really-doing-for-your-skin/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 13:17:25 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505119 Why the ‘Salmon Sperm’ Trend Isn’t Going Away — And What It’s Really Doing for Your Skin

If you’ve been keeping an eye on global skincare trends or visiting beauty hotspots like LA, London, or Seoul, you may have come across the term Rejuran—the injectable treatment made from salmon DNA. While the concept might initially sound unusual, it’s gaining traction worldwide for a reason. We spoke with Dr. Yip, surgeon and founder of Jolie Beaute in Hong Kong, to explore why Rejuran is here to stay and how it’s transforming the way we think about anti-aging treatments.

What is Rejuran, and why is everyone talking about it?

Unlike more traditional treatments like Botox, which works by freezing muscles, or dermal fillers that add volume, Rejuran takes a completely different approach. This treatment works at a cellular level to repair and rejuvenate skin. The key ingredient in Rejuran is Polynucleotides (PN)—tiny DNA fragments extracted from salmon. These DNA fragments are carefully chosen due to their similarity to human DNA and their ability to stimulate deep skin healing and regeneration.

As Dr. Yip explains, “Rejuran helps with collagen production, enhances hydration, boosts elasticity, and improves the skin barrier. After a few sessions, patients typically experience smoother, “bouncier” and more hydrated skin.”

The real draw of Rejuran is that it focuses on restoring your skin’s natural vitality, rather than just offering quick fixes. This regenerative approach offers long-term benefits and healthier skin, rather than a temporary, superficial effect.

The science behind the trend: Why salmon DNA?

You may be wondering, why salmon? The use of salmon DNA might sound strange, but it’s rooted in science. Salmon DNA shares a structure remarkably similar to human DNA, which allows it to effectively support the healing process in human skin. These Polynucleotides encourage the skin’s natural repair mechanisms, which leads to healthier, more vibrant skin over time.

“We’re not just seeing cosmetic improvements,” Dr. Yip explains. “With Rejuran, the skin’s structure is genuinely improving at the cellular level, which leads to long-lasting, noticeable results.”

Instead of focusing on external, short-term solutions, this treatment nurtures the skin’s natural regeneration process, making it ideal for those who want to invest in long-term skin health.

What to expect from a Rejuran treatment

If you’re considering trying Rejuran, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from the treatment:

The Treatment: Micro-injections of the salmon DNA solution are administered across the face. Typically, around 30 injections per side are made. While the process may sound uncomfortable, it’s generally well-tolerated, and the pain is minimal.
Downtime: After the treatment, expect some mild redness or swelling for about 4-24 hours. Some people may experience puffiness around the eyes, but this tends to subside quickly.
Results: Visible improvements can usually be seen within two weeks, with optimal results typically occurring after three sessions. Patients report bouncier, fresher, and more hydrated skin.
Frequency: For the first two months, treatments are recommended every 3-4 weeks. After that, you can maintain results with treatments every 6-12 months.

Dr. Yip highlights that Rejuran isn’t about offering an instant fix; it’s about restoring the skin’s health over time. “It’s a long-term approach to skincare, focusing on building the foundation for healthy skin rather than masking problems temporarily.”

Beyond Botox: The rise of “Tweakments” and natural beauty

While Botox and dermal fillers continue to be popular, there’s a noticeable shift in global skincare trends—especially in Hong Kong—towards more natural, subtle treatments like Rejuran. As more patients seek results that look and feel authentic, the demand for treatments that restore and rejuvenate is growing.

In Korea, London, LA and Singapore, Rejuran has already made waves, and it’s gaining popularity in Hong Kong as well. People are opting for treatments that focus on long-term skin health, rather than just immediate, superficial results.

“The trend isn’t just about looking younger,” says Dr. Yip. “It’s about restoring the skin’s vitality so that it stays healthy and strong. This approach is gaining momentum in Hong Kong, where more people are looking for treatments that improve their skin’s overall health, not just its appearance.”

This growing trend in Hong Kong is also part of a wider global shift toward responsible skincare that focuses on the health of the skin, rather than temporary fixes. Patients are becoming more discerning, understanding that true beauty comes from within and from treatments that nurture and protect their skin over the long term.

Trust (in your treatment) vs. fads

As with any new beauty trend, authenticity is key. There’s an increasing number of counterfeit or diluted Rejuran treatments in the market, which is why it’s so important to seek out licensed and reputable clinics. Dr. Yip emphasises that at Jolie Beaute, they use only genuine products and ensure the treatments are performed with the utmost care and expertise.

“It’s essential that patients trust the treatments they’re receiving,” Dr. Yip says. “At Jolie Beaute, we only use authorised, high-quality Rejuran, and we pride ourselves on offering a zero-sales, no-pressure environment. Our focus is always on what’s best for our patients.”

Ethical skincare and patient-centric care

WOI’s take on this? In Hong Kong, so many beauty treatments are driven by sales and promotions. It’s refreshing to see Jolie Beaute’s commitment to ethical practices and patient-first care which sets it apart in the competitive beauty industry. By focusing on providing transparent, professional treatments rather than pushing promotions or sales, the clinic can build trust with every patient.

Dr. Yip believes that the most important thing is to ensure patients feel informed and confident in their decisions. At Jolie Beaute, the aim is to offer a space where patients can learn about the treatments available to them, ask questions, and make informed choices based on their needs.

“It’s about helping patients understand the treatments, the science behind them, and why they’re the best options for their skin,” says Dr. Yip. “We never “push” treatments. It’s all about finding the right treatment for each individual.”

This patient-centric approach has earned Jolie Beaute a reputation for offering not just effective treatments, but also a supportive, educational environment for those looking to take control of their skincare journey.

What’s next for skincare in Hong Kong?

Availability of affordable beauty treatments in Hong Kong is on the rise, which is good news for us all. So, whilst a quick “tweakment” trip to Korea might be tempting, grabbing a HK$3,000 “salmon sperm” treatment in Hong Kong might be more gentle on the wallet.

The future of skincare in Hong Kong looks promising, with treatments like Rejuran leading the charge toward a more holistic, scientifically-backed approach to anti-aging and skin health. With a growing focus on authenticity, patient care, and long-term wellness, Hong Kong is becoming a local favourite for effective, affordable, responsible beauty practices.

As the beauty landscape continues to change and advance, the shift toward natural, regenerative treatments like Rejuran is helping to redefine what beauty means. For those seeking authentic, effective skincare, Rejuran offers a solution that nurtures the skin while promoting long-term health, ensuring that beauty is more than just skin deep.

For those curious about Rejuran, it’s clear this treatment offers something more than the latest beauty craze—it’s a thoughtful, science-backed approach to skin health that invites you to consider long-term care over quick fixes, with results that speak for themselves.

42.6% of Cervical Cancer Cases in Hong Kong Are Diagnosed at Advanced Stages—Why Screening Could Save Your Life https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/42-6-of-cervical-cancer-cases-in-hong-kong-are-diagnosed-at-advanced-stages-why-screening-could-save-your-life/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 12:27:57 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505113 42.6% of Cervical Cancer Cases in Hong Kong Are Diagnosed at Advanced Stages—Why Screening Could Save Your Life

Cervical cancer is on the rise in Hong Kong, with 42.6% of new cases diagnosed at an advanced stage. Despite the fact that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in women, the screening rate in Hong Kong remains shockingly low—only 39% of women have undergone regular screening. This means many are missing out on life-saving early detection.

Regular screening can reduce the risk of cervical cancer and death by up to 90%, but too many women remain unaware of the importance of timely checks. As the disease continues to impact more women, it’s crucial that we break down the barriers preventing regular screenings and empower women to take control of their health.

In this WOI Insights post, we sit down with the Karen Leung Foundation (KLF) to explore the current state of cervical cancer in Hong Kong. We look at the barriers women face in accessing screenings, and how innovative solutions like Roche Diagnostics HPV self-sampling are changing the game. The statistics are alarming, but there is hope—through education, awareness, and action, we can make a significant impact. Let’s accelerate cervical cancer prevention in Hong Kong.

Cervical Cancer in Hong Kong: A Preventable Crisis

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, with over half a million new cases reported each year. In Hong Kong, however, the statistics are particularly troubling. Over the past decade, the number of new cervical cancer cases has risen by 30%, with 522 new cases reported in 2022 alone. Even more alarming is the fact that 42.6% of these cases were diagnosed at an advanced stage, meaning that for too many women, it was too late for successful treatment.

This is not a unique problem for Hong Kong. Globally, cervical cancer is primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). While HPV is common and usually asymptomatic, persistent infection can lead to cervical cancer if left undetected. In fact, by the age of 50, it’s estimated that 80% of women will have been infected with HPV. Yet, the majority of these infections do not lead to cancer, thanks to early detection through regular screening.

The Life-Saving Power of Regular Screening

Cervical screening is the single most effective way to prevent cervical cancer. In fact, regular screenings can reduce the risk of cervical cancer and death by as much as 90%. Screening options like the Pap smear or HPV testing allow for early detection of abnormalities that could lead to cancer, even before symptoms appear.

The impact of timely screenings cannot be overstated. For women aged 35 to 64, regular screening can reduce the risk of death from cervical cancer by 92%. Even for younger women aged 25 to 34, screening can lower the risk of death by 73%. These are remarkable statistics that show how much early detection can change the outcome for women diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Unfortunately, fewer women in Hong Kong are taking advantage of this life-saving opportunity. Despite the benefits, only 39% of women in Hong Kong have undergone cervical screening. This is a stark reminder that more must be done to raise awareness about the importance of screening and to make these screenings more accessible to women across the city.

Why Aren’t More Women Getting Screened?

According to a 2024 survey, the reasons for this low screening rate are varied. One of the biggest barriers is the fear of pain, with 34% of women saying they are too afraid to undergo screening because of discomfort. Others feel they are healthy and don’t see the need for screening, while 17% are simply too busy with work or life responsibilities to take time off for a check-up.

Additionally, a lack of awareness is contributing to the problem. Only 38% of women in Hong Kong are knowledgeable about cervical cancer screening. This lack of understanding can prevent women from seeking out screenings or even recognizing the risks associated with not being tested regularly.

These statistics reflect a significant gap in education and outreach efforts. To close this gap, we need to focus on increasing awareness about the benefits of cervical screening and providing women with the support they need to overcome the barriers preventing them from seeking care.

The Future of Screening: HPV Self-Sampling

One solution that could help address some of the barriers to cervical cancer screening is HPV self-sampling. This innovative method allows women to collect their own samples for HPV testing in the comfort and privacy of their own home. HPV self-sampling has been shown to provide similar accuracy to samples collected by clinicians, while also offering women the convenience and privacy that traditional screening methods may not.

Self-sampling is a breakthrough in accessibility and could significantly increase the number of women getting screened. By offering a less invasive and more private option for testing, self-sampling could help alleviate the fear and discomfort that many women associate with cervical screenings.

In addition to self-sampling, innovative programs like the KLF’s “HK Women’s Checkup Campaign” are making screening more accessible to underprivileged women. This program, which offers free cervical cancer screenings to 300 eligible women, provides both self-collection and clinician-led testing options. If test results are abnormal, the program ensures follow-up services, providing the necessary support for women to seek treatment.

Mental Health and Cervical Cancer: The Hidden Burden

While much of the focus on cervical cancer revolves around early detection and prevention, it’s important to acknowledge the emotional toll that the disease can have on women. Research has shown that nearly half of gynecological cancer patients suffer from depression, with women in Asian populations facing a particularly high rate of mental health challenges. In southwest China, 44% of patients with gynecological cancer experience depression, compared to only 22-26% in Western countries.

The psychological impact of cervical cancer is often underestimated, but it is just as crucial as the physical treatment of the disease. Providing mental health support alongside medical treatment can significantly improve the overall well-being of patients and survivors, helping them navigate the emotional challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.

#AcceleratingAction: What Can Be Done?

The statistics are clear: cervical cancer in Hong Kong is on the rise, and too many women are missing out on the opportunity for early detection. However, there is hope. By breaking down the barriers to screening—through education, better access to services, and innovative solutions like HPV self-sampling—we can make a real difference in the fight against cervical cancer.

It’s time for action. The government, healthcare providers, and community organizations must work together to raise awareness and ensure that every woman in Hong Kong has access to the screenings and support she needs.

If you’re a woman reading this, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Regular screenings can save your life. Take control of your health today. Whether it’s participating in the “HK Women’s Checkup Campaign” or scheduling a regular screening, make cervical health a priority.

Let’s take action to ensure that cervical cancer is no longer a preventable tragedy. Together, we can make a difference. For more information and to register for the “HK Women’s Checkup Campaign,” visit the Karen Leung Foundation’s website and join the movement for better health.

This is a call to arms for women in Hong Kong—don’t wait. Break the silence, take control, and spread the word about the importance of cervical cancer screening. The time to act is now.

Moving Countries 11 Times – How Myriam Shemtov Found Belonging in Hong Kong’s Scented Sanctuary https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/from-11-moves-and-counting-how-myriam-shemtov-found-belonging-in-hong-kongs-scented-sanctuary/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 11:48:00 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505104 From 11 Moves to Home: How Myriam Shemtov Found Belonging in Hong Kong’s Scented Sanctuary

What makes a home? In a city as dynamic and ever-changing as Hong Kong, it’s a question that lingers long after you’ve unpacked your bags. For Myriam Shemtov, a true global citizen who has called over 11 places across Africa, Europe, and Asia home, the answer is neither a place nor a possession—it’s a feeling. It’s warmth, it’s clarity, it’s belonging. It’s about creating a space that feels grounded, no matter where you are. And it was this pursuit that led her to establish Mensō, a brand born from her own rich life experience.

Raised in Senegal, with roots in Ivory Coast, Myriam’s life is a mosaic of cultures and experiences. After business school in France, she embarked on a global career that took her to the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Monaco, mainland China, and now Hong Kong. As the Global Head of Product and IT for a major logistics company, Myriam’s life is marked by constant movement and innovation. But when it comes to finding true comfort, it’s not technology or sleek boardrooms that inspire her—it’s the simple act of building a home wherever she goes.

“I don’t have a background in interiors,” Myriam admits. “But I know what it means to create an environment that feels right. I’ve built homes in so many places, and I’ve learned that tidiness, a clean home, and scent is one of the most powerful ways to make a space your own.”

Creating a Home Away From Home

For Myriam, home has never been defined by physical walls or possessions; it’s something more intangible. Having moved across countries and continents, she found that home is a construct we carry within us. It’s about the familiar—the scent of a candle, the warmth of a space, the comfort of those we love. It’s these small, everyday moments that transform a new city into a place where we can finally breathe, relax, and feel truly at home.

The idea for Mensō emerged from this very philosophy. The brand name itself combines the French word maison (home) and the Japanese ensō (circle of enlightenment), representing a balance between comfort and mindful living. It’s a collection built around fragrances that don’t just fill a room, but cultivate an experience—a feeling of grounded calm in the midst of a busy, transient life.

“My husband is the safest place and person I know,” Myriam shares. “He makes every house feel like home.” In both her personal and professional life, she follows the philosophy that “leaders eat last”—a belief she carries into every interaction, from boardrooms to business ventures. It’s this deep sense of humility and grounded leadership that influences her approach to Mensō: a brand rooted in real experience, rather than trend-chasing or artificial perfection.

Building a Brand From the Ground Up

Mensō wasn’t born out of a business plan or a focus group—it grew organically from Myriam’s own journey. After each move, she had to rebuild—not just physically, but emotionally. She understands better than most that the key to feeling at home is creating an environment that reflects who you are. In frenetic paced cities like Hong Kong, this philosophy resonates deeply, especially for those that understand the challenge of finding balance amidst constant change.

“Moving so often has taught me that the small things matter,” Myriam explains. “The scent of a candle, the feeling of a familiar space—it’s these little elements that make a new place feel like home.” It’s this knowledge that drives the design behind Mensō’s collection. Each scent is a journey—a carefully crafted fragrance that taps into universal emotions like calm, nostalgia, and comfort. These are the scents that, no matter where you are, can transport you to a place of safety, clarity, and connection.

For those of us living in Hong Kong, a city that can often feel like a transient hub of busy professionals and changing faces, Mensō offers a rare opportunity: the chance to pause, breathe, and reconnect. “I wanted to create something that helps people slow down,” says Myriam. “We live in an energy of constant movement, especially in Hong Kong. I wanted to provide a moment to savour—to reconnect with yourself and the space you’re in.”

The Mensō Approach: Slow Living in a Fast World

In a world obsessed with speed, technology, and the next big thing, Mensō’s approach is one of deliberate, thoughtful design. Unlike the mass-market home fragrances that flood our homes, Mensō candles are not about novelty or fleeting trends. Each scent is intentional—crafted to evoke a specific emotion, to help you pause and be present. Myriam doesn’t just want to sell candles; she wants to create experiences that feel authentic and personal.

“We don’t chase trends,” Myriam insists. “We focus on creating something that feels timeless, something that lasts.” And this philosophy extends beyond the products themselves; it’s a way of life. In Hong Kong, where the pressure to perform and keep up with the city’s rhythm can feel overwhelming, Mensō offers a moment of reprieve—a chance to create a sanctuary in your own space.

What Does Home Mean to You?

For many of us, the idea of home can seem elusive. But for Myriam Shemtov, home is not defined by geography—it’s about the people and experiences that ground us. Whether it’s the safety of a loved one, the clarity of a familiar scent, the satisfaction of a clean home, or the stillness of a quiet space, Mensō is a brand that helps you cultivate that sense of belonging.

For those who have lived in multiple countries, constantly on the move, the search for home is universal. It’s not about the place; it’s about the feeling. And in a city as vibrant and ever-changing as Hong Kong, Mensō offers more than just a candle—it offers a reminder to slow down and create a space where you can truly feel at home, no matter where life takes you.

So, what does home mean to you? Is it a place, a person, or a feeling? Mensō is here to help you find that answer.

Hong Kong Parents, Are You Making This Critical Mistake? Why Reading With Your Child Is More Important Than Ever https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/news/readconnecthongkong/ Mon, 03 Mar 2025 11:40:31 +0000 https://staging.whiteorchidinsights.com/?p=505099 Hong Kong Parents, Are You Making This Critical Mistake? Why Reading With Your Child Is More Important Than Ever

If you think Hong Kong’s education system alone will set your child up for success, think again. While local students consistently perform well in exams, a deeper issue is emerging—children are losing confidence in their reading ability, and parental engagement in literacy is alarmingly low.

A study from PIRLS ranked Hong Kong 49th out of 57 countries in reading confidence among Primary 4 students, and parental engagement in reading ranks second to last in the world. Only 16% of Hong Kong parents engage in preschool literacy activities, compared to 74% globally. This means many children are missing out on crucial early development skills that can shape their future.

Enter REadCONNECT, a city-wide movement designed to turn the tide. This spring, Bring Me A Book Hong Kong is launching an ambitious campaign to inspire parents to reclaim their role in their child’s reading journey. And the best part? It only takes 10 minutes a day.

The Science Is Clear: Reading Together Changes Everything

The benefits of shared reading go far beyond literacy. Neuroscience shows that reading aloud activates 20% more of a child’s brain than reading independently, lighting up areas responsible for comprehension, memory, and creativity.

Children who are read to daily hear 1.4 million more words by age five, setting them up for lifelong academic success (Ohio State University).
– Reading releases oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, deepening parent-child bonds and reducing stress (Harvard Medical School*).
– Family reading time fosters emotional intelligence, sparking meaningful conversations that build resilience, empathy, and confidence.
Screentime cannot replace human connection. Reading together provides irreplaceable moments of learning and bonding that technology simply cannot replicate. According to an article by South China Morning Post (SCMP), about 28 per cent of parents say their children’s use of electronic devices resulted in verbal insults, physical threats or unreasonable punishment.

The REadCONNECT Movement: Join the Biggest Family Literacy Celebration in Hong Kong

REadCONNECT is bringing parents, children, and educators together in an exciting lineup of events designed to make reading fun, interactive, and meaningful.

March 8 – Hong Kong Central Library, Causeway Bay(10:00 – 11:30 AM): Dr. Fanny Lam will present research on how shared reading boosts executive function, cognitive skills, and emotional resilience—all critical for success in today’s world.

March & April – Readathon Challenge: Schools and families can sign up for the REadCONNECT Readathon, where parents and children commit to daily reading and raise funds to support literacy programs.

April 27 – REadCONNECT Tram Parade & Family Day:
– Hop aboard a branded storytelling tram, traveling from Whitty Street to Causeway Bay, bringing books to life in a unique moving experience.
Meet and greet celebrity authors and illustrators in the “Bring Me an Author” series, where families can experience firsthand the magic of storytelling.
– Get creative at the interactive bookmaking workshop at Hong Kong Central Library, inspired by Mo Willems’ beloved Knuffle Bunny trilogy.

How You Can Get Involved

✔️ Parents – Start small. Just 10 minutes a day of reading can transform your child’s future. Sign up for the Readathon and make shared reading a fun, rewarding habit.

5 Beauty Supplements to help you Age Better

Feeling the pressure to keep up with the ever evolving wellness trends? Throughout the past decade, we have seen hundreds of beauty fads come and go but it’s hard to ignore a significant shift in the preferences and priorities of consumers. For years, quick fix solutions like Botox and filler have been the go-to solutions for anti-ageing concerns, but in recent years we have seen more of a demand for holistic wellness products focused on longevity, with the emergence of a new trend coined ‘healthy ageing’. In Hong Kong, High Society Clinic with its growing line of beauty-tech treatments, beauty products, and supplements, such as Glowagen is leading the way with a range of supplements to help you age better. We spoke with founder, Rebecca Chung to find out more about how the beauty industry is changing and what people in Hong Kong can do to age better.

“First, consumers are so much more savvy than they used to be. They still look to celebrities for inspiration and ideas but now, most people will know someone that has aesthetic treatments of some sort. This means there is a level of scrutiny on the beauty industry and people want to know whatever they are paying for will really work. Our customers also want to feel good (not just look good) so we’ve introduced items to the brand that help with sleep, energy, gut health, and intimate wellness.

Healthy ageing, fuelled by a demand in preventative approaches, is all about improving longevity with a focus on preventative methods backed by science over quick fixes. This new idea of ‘healthy ageing’ prioritises a more holistic approach to wellness as opposed to focusing only on what people can see.

“We have a lot of clients in Hong Kong that are so tired and they feel it shows on their face. Yes, they want facial treatments to look fresh and youthful but they also want better sleep and overall health. Of course, we’re not doctors but we work with doctors and have developed a line of supplements to help people sleep and feel better”.

With the continual development of research targeting gut health, sleep and anti-ageing products, the importance of a well-rounded approach is becoming more important than ever.

High Society Clinic’s Glowagen, founded by Rebecca Chung, is an easy-to-take supplement that helps people feel better, not just look better. The Glowagen line includes a range of preventative supplements with standout key ingredients to help slow down the signs of ageing and promote longevity from the inside out. Broken down, these are:

NAD+2.0

NAD+ is produced naturally in our bodies but levels begin to decline with age and as a result, can boost the ageing process. While we can’t stop the natural decline of NAD+, studies have shown that supplementing NAD+ can help to slow the decline and the subsequent effects. Glowagen’s NAD+2.0 can help to restore declining NAD+ levels in the body, helping to improve sleep quality, reduce fat synthesis, aid in fat reduction and water drainage and contains antioxidants and anti-allergic properties to delayskin ageing.

Cordyceps IMMU-BOOST

While it’s no secret that Fungai has been a staple ingredient in holistic supplements for decades, Glowagen’s Cordyceps IMMU-BOOST contains five key ingredients to boost immunity, improve sleep quality, relieve stress and calm the mind, improves dull skin and acts as an antioxidant and anti-ageing agent. Made up of Cordyceps CS-4 strain, Lactoferrin, Heme Iron, Royal Jelly, and Fermented Dark Honey to support overall health and wellbeing.

Bounce Plus

Collagen, protein molecules made up of amino acids, occurs naturally in your body but as we age, its levels begin to deplete which can lead to muscle loss, stiff ligaments and joints as well as loose skin and wrinkles. Low collagen levels in the body can be replenished with supplements like Glowagen’s Bounce Plus which is enriched with 6500mg of collagen. Bounce Plus features seven key beauty ingredients including patented Japanese Sakura Essence, Proteoglycan, Broccoli Sprout Extract, GABA, Long Pepper Extract and Glutathione. These key ingredients help the skin maintain elasticity and smoothness, helps the skin retain moisture, acts as an antioxidant and anti-ageing agent, and brightens dull skin through replenishing collagen levels.

This 7,000-Year-Old Health System Just Fixed What My GP Couldn’t

My Ayurvedic Awakening in Sri Lanka’s Secret Sanctuary by Sarah Keates. Sri Lanka is famous for its tea, temples, and tropical beaches, but I arrived seeking something more profound: Ayurveda, the ancient Indian wellness system known as the “science of life.” Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to health, aiming to balance mind, body, and spirit. At its heart are the three fundamental energies, or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In simple terms, these doshas are like elemental personality types. Vata (air and ether) is the energy of movement – think creativity and spontaneity, but also restlessness. Pitta (fire and water) is the force of transformation – passionate and driven, though prone to intensity. Kapha (earth and water) embodies stability – caring and calm, but sometimes complacent. Each of us is born with a unique mix of these doshas, and if they fall out of balance, Ayurveda says our well-being suffers.

Forget Bali. This Is Where Hong Kong’s Smart Travellers Are Heading in 2025

Is Sri Lanka the new Bali? Possibly. Standing on the southern coast, looking out over tangled palms and an ocean that doesn’t seem to end, it’s hard not to draw comparisons. I don’t love pitting one destination against another, but there are parallels. Sri Lanka has the beauty, the forestry, the surf and the serenity—just without the brunch queues and Instagram itineraries. It still feels raw, genuine, and blissfully unspoilt.

Can One Voice Really Change Hong Kong’s Social Enterprise Landscape? Anushka Purohit Explains Her Mission

I’m the only person on the list who at first glance wouldn’t ‘look’ like a Hong Konger, and that’s my power. I want to represent people from different walks of life, especially people like me who truly identify as a Hong Konger but don’t necessarily fit the traditional boxes to be considered as one. I’ve always cared about creating opportunities that don’t exist, so I hope to use this platform to make unheard voices heard.
